Sadri (also known as Sadani) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Indian states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Bihar. According to the research report of Bihar tribal research institute, Morabadi , Ranchi, in 1981, Sadri basically is the mother tongue of 11 (eleven ) tribes like Chik Baraik, Lohra, Binjhia etc. It is also the mother tongue of the Sadan people. Apart from native speakers, it is also used as a lingua franca by several tribal groups, such as Kharia, Munda, and Kurukh. Many speakers from these tribal groups have adopted it as their first language. It also serves as a lingua franca among the tea tribes of Assam, West Bengal, and Bangladesh.

According to the 2011 Census, the Sadri language had approximately 5,130,000 native speakers, identified as 19,100 Gawari, 4,350,000 "Sadan/Sadri," and 763,000 "Nagpuriya." Additionally, about 7 million people speak it as a second language.

Declare Sadri Language as the Second Official Language

The All Adivasi Sadri Speakers Association has demanded that Sadri, mother tongue of 11(eleven) tribes and the lingua franca of Jharkhand, be declared the second official language of the state. In this regard, the association has sent a letter to the Governor and Chief Minister of Jharkhand. The letter states that the mother tongue of the minority tribal communities in Jharkhand and the lingua franca for tribes compelled to reside outside the state should be declared the second official language of the state under the provisions granted by the Constitution.
Additionally, the association has demanded that Sadri be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, the establishment of Sadri medium schools from primary to intermediate levels in tribal-dominated areas, and the inclusion of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Sadri in all state universities. This demand was made by the association’s president, Chatur Baraik.
